Whaling is the hunting of whales, largely
discontinued 1986. Whales are killed for
whale oil (made from the thick layer of fat
under the skin called `blubber'), used for
food and cosmetics, for the large reserve of
oil in the head of the sperm whale, used in
the leather industry, and for ambergris, a
waxlike substance from the intestines, used
in making perfumes.
