  1. Whaling is the hunting of whales, largely 
  2. discontinued 1986. Whales are killed for 
  3. whale oil (made from the thick layer of fat 
  4. under the skin called `blubber'), used for 
  5. food and cosmetics, for the large reserve of 
  6. oil in the head of the sperm whale, used in 
  7. the leather industry, and for ambergris, a 
  8. waxlike substance from the intestines, used 
  9. in making perfumes.
